About the Specialization
The master of science in education with a specialization in teaching English as a foreign language focuses on training current and future educators in the areas of foreign language instruction, assessment and evaluation and curriculum development. This specialization provides students with a foundation in second language learning theories and instructional technology and distance education. Through an articulation agreement with Via Lingua—Florence, Italy, students can transfer up to 9 credits toward program requirements. Additional elective courses for advanced studies in two concentration areas are also available. Course content is research based and infuses best practices in language education.

Entrance Requirements
Completed admission application packet, including a $50 nonrefundable application fee made payable to Nova Southeastern University

Official transcript indicating conferral of a bachelor’s degree by a regionally accredited institution (2.5 minimum cumulative grade point average required)

Official transcripts from all previously attended postsecondary institutions

FOR NON-NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKERS
Applicants whose native language is not English are required to demonstrate English proficiency by
providing proof of a minimum score of 550/213/80 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam.

Applied Professional Experience
The applied professional experience and the international applied professional experience are among the many practical applications included in the teaching English as a foreign language specialization. The capstone project is the final step in the completion of the program. Conducted in an appropriate educational setting, either in the United States or abroad, students will conduct a bilingual or foreign language teaching experience, maintain reflective journals, and create files of samples of their students’ work and the assessment instruments used to demonstrate achievement of professional and content standards. All applied professional experiences are accompanied by portfolios detailing the rationale, process, and evaluation of the project. Students who have completed an international TEFL certificate, like the Via Lingua Certificate in TEFL may use the certificate to fulfill the applied
professional experience requirement. All other international TEFL certificates must be approved by the program office.

Completion Requirements
Satisfactory completion of all required coursework

Successful completion of the Field Experience, including the portfolio, or an International TEFL certificate

Cumulative maintained grade point average of 3.0 or higher

Completed application for degree

Convenient Delivery Options
Coursework for the teaching English as a foreign language specialization is conducted completely
online. Online courses allow students to interact asynchronously in a virtual classroom. This distance
delivery options allow international students to earn an advanced degree from an accredited American
university without leaving their jobs or countries.
